The Brandeis School of Law's Mediation Clinic offers second- and third-year law students the opportunity to serve as neutral mediators in Family Court, helping self-represented litigants reach agreements in family law disputes. Through this clinic, students build hands-on experience in alternative dispute resolution while promoting access to justice in the Louisville community.

With a focus on listening, neutrality, and creative problem-solving, the Mediation Clinic equips students to manage real conflict with professionalism and empathy.


For Prospective Law Students

If you're interested in negotiation, family law, or resolving disputes outside of court, the Mediation Clinic offers practical training in one of the legal profession’s fastest-growing fields.

Students develop skills in:

  • Mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR)
  • Conflict analysis and problem-solving
  • Client communication and managing difficult conversations
  • Family law contexts involving self-represented litigants

For Community Members

The Mediation Clinic provides free mediation services in Family Court to help self-represented parties resolve legal disputes—most often related to parenting plans, custody, and visitation—outside of the courtroom. All mediations are conducted by trained law students under faculty supervision.

This service helps reduce delays in the legal process and supports families in reaching mutual agreements in a respectful and structured environment.
