Our Approach

Law for the people. Learning by doing.

At the Brandeis School of Law, we believe the law should serve the people – and that legal education should prepare students to do the same. Our approach is built on access, purpose and practice.

Rooted in Justice Louis D. Brandeis’s belief that law is a public trust, we combine rigorous classroom learning with real-world experience, individualized mentorship and a deep commitment to public service. We train lawyers who are not only skilled – but principled, community-focused and ready to lead.

Personalized attention in a tight-knit community

At Brandeis Law, small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio create an environment where students are truly known. Our intimate setting fosters close connections with professors, mentors and peers – and our open-door culture extends across faculty, staff and even the Dean. This personalized support helps students grow with confidence, community and a strong sense of purpose from day one.

Experiential learning with public service as a core commitment

At Brandeis Law, public service is at the heart of our mission – not just a requirement, but a reflection of who we are as The People’s Law School. Through the Samuel L. Greenebaum Public Service Program, every student completes at least 30 hours of meaningful service, working with organizations that serve vulnerable and underrepresented communities. Opportunities include placements at legal aid offices, public defender agencies, government entities and other community-based partners.

Our students don’t just study the law – they use it to make a difference.

Externships that bridge law school and legal practice

Our externship program helps students transition from being in law school to being a lawyer. Brandeis Law offers placements in major areas of legal practice, including:

  • Judicial externships
  • Criminal justice externships
  • Public interest externships
  • In-house counsel externships

These opportunities sharpen legal skills, strengthen professional identity and build lifelong connections.

Clinics that empower change

Through our Law Clinics, students handle real cases, from start to finish, while working directly with clients, attorneys and judges. Since 2009, Brandeis Law students have helped more than 1,000 families in need, gaining hands-on experience while advancing justice.

Our clinics empower students to become agents of change – because meaningful impact starts now.
