Brandeis Law students to host wills clinic for veterans

October 21, 2016

As part of its commitment to focus more on outreach to veterans, the Student Bar Association, along with Brandeis Law's Veterans Advocacy Organization, is hosting a wills clinic for local veterans.

The student groups are working with Louisville's Legal Aid Society to draft wills and power of attorney documents for veterans who have been referred by the Legal Aid Society. Students will draft the documents, which will be reviewed by Legal Aid attorneys.

"The students get the opportunity for hands-on experience, and it's giving back to veterans," said SBA President Katie Bonds. "It's a no-brainer."

While wills are important for everyone to have, veterans can face different scenarios than civilians, said VOA President Kelly Reeves, a veteran herself.

"Their needs are a little bit more unique," she said. "There are unique situations, like being in the Reserves, that they have to plan for that the general population doesn't have to think about."

The clinic could also serve indigent veterans who are no longer in service but still need these documents, Reeves said.

The wills clinic will be from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 31 at the law school.
