Brad Blackwell ’98 expands support through scholarship and mentorship
January 20, 2026
When Brad Blackwell '98 makes a commitment, it’s with both vision and follow-through. This year, the Marion County native and high-profile Louisville attorney established a scholarship for a Brandeis Law student from Kentucky – ideally from his home county. The scholarship goes beyond financial support: Blackwell will personally mentor the recipient, and Churchill Downs Incorporated colleagues will provide additional mentorship opportunities.
“It’s important to invest in the next generation of lawyers in ways that go beyond the classroom,” Blackwell said. “Connecting students with experienced professionals can be as transformative as any scholarship check.”
Blackwell is considering turning the scholarship into a permanent endowment, ensuring that students continue to benefit from this combination of financial and professional support for decades to come.
Blackwell’s legal career reflects the same mix of dedication and leadership. Since joining Churchill Downs Incorporated in 2005, he has held roles across legal, regulatory, and operational leadership, culminating in his current position as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. Prior to CDI, he served as Assistant General Counsel and Secretary for Michaels Stores, Inc., and practiced law with Jones Day in Dallas.
A 1994 University of Kentucky graduate with a B.S. in Accounting, Blackwell earned his J.D. from Brandeis School of Law in 1998. His trajectory – from Marion County to the executive suite of one of Louisville’s most iconic companies – serves as an inspiration for current students and fellow alumni alike.
Brandeis Law is proud to recognize Blackwell’s commitment to opening doors for students, fostering mentorship, and strengthening the profession.
