At the Brandeis School of Law, we believe in preparing students to thrive in a global legal landscape. Our international programs offer students the chance to study abroad, gain cross-cultural experience, and explore comparative legal systems firsthand. Whether you're interested in global business, human rights, or international policy, these opportunities will deepen your understanding of the law and broaden your perspective.
With options ranging from short-term summer programs to semester-long exchanges, Brandeis Law makes global learning accessible and rewarding. Programs are structured to ensure academic credit, ABA compliance, and seamless integration into your law school plan of study.
Students interested in studying abroad should consult the University of Louisville International Center for visa and travel requirements, and meet with Professor JoAnne Sweeny to explore options and register for programs.
Semester Exchange Programs
Brandeis students can immerse themselves in global legal systems through semester-long exchanges with partner law schools in Europe, gaining international experience while earning academic credit.
Leeds, England
Partnering with the University of Leeds School of Law, this exchange offers Brandeis students a chance to study in one of the UK’s most dynamic academic environments. Students take law courses alongside their UK counterparts and experience British legal education firsthand.
Frankfurt, Germany
The Frankfurt program provides immersion into European Union law, German legal traditions, and global commerce. Students benefit from exposure to one of Europe’s financial capitals and take courses in English at a prestigious partner university.
Luxembourg
Located in the heart of Europe, the Luxembourg program connects students to the institutions of the European Union. This experience is ideal for those interested in international courts, diplomacy, or European legal systems.
Summer Program
Summer School in Budapest
This annual summer program in Hungary is jointly taught by faculty from Brandeis Law and local Hungarian professors. It’s a unique opportunity to engage in comparative legal study while living in one of Europe’s most historic and culturally rich cities.
International Service Learning Program (ISLP)
Brandeis School of Law students can take part in the University of Louisville’s International Service Learning Program (ISLP), a credit-bearing, interdisciplinary experience that blends legal education with community-based service around the world.
Through ISLP, students travel with UofL faculty and peers from across disciplines to work directly with international partners, addressing issues such as access to justice, human rights, public health, and economic development. Law students contribute their expertise through workshops, legal clinics, and community engagement efforts, all while building cultural competency and leadership skills.
Programs have included destinations like Belize, the Philippines, Ghana, and Botswana—each offering a unique opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-world international contexts. For students interested in public interest work, cross-cultural understanding, or global human rights, ISLP provides a meaningful way to engage.

Other International Programs
In addition to opportunities offered through the University of Louisville, Brandeis School of Law students may pursue international internships or enroll in study abroad or exchange programs hosted by other accredited law schools. These experiences can expand your global perspective and offer unique, career-shaping experiences in legal systems around the world.
Students must ensure that any external program complies with the American Bar Association's guidelines for foreign study and has been approved by the ABA to ensure eligibility for academic credit.
